Chan School of Buddhism

Chan is the school of Chinese Buddhism. It is a term that refers to a way of living or experiencing the world.
Ultimately, Chan means direct awakening to interconnectedness and impermanence, and the consequent arising of Buddhist wisdom and compassion. This awakening experience is inexpressible in words; it is inaccessible to the dualism of language and concepts. Rather, it is a state of awareness free of self-reference.
There is a saying: “Chan is not established on words and language.” The teaching starts with knowing one’s self, but the process of practice leads to a discovery of our interconnectedness with others. Direct personal experience of Chan brings about the actualization of wisdom and compassion, leading to peace and understanding of the world.
Chan teaching encompasses four key elements, inseparable and mutually inclusive:

  • Faith is confidence in oneself and the path.
  • Understanding refers to the insights gained on the path.
  • Practice transforms our negative habits and distorted views.
  • Awakening is the actualization of wisdom and compassion.

About Gilbert

Gilbert inherits the lineage of both the Caodong and Linji Chan schools. Among these five disciples, he is the only Chan master resides permanently and actively propagating the teachings in North America.

Throughout his 53 years of dedicated Chan practice and over 20 years’ teaching of the Dharma, his guidance in meditation is vibrant and insightful. He skillfully imparts learning and experiential understanding in a relaxed, approachable yet profound manner, blending everyday life situations with the great teachings of Chan masters. Inherited traditional Chan teaching style, Gilbert points to the mind directly, which is the core of Chan. Gilbert’s teaching emphasizes guiding meditation through right view and insight into the ultimate truth, helping practitioners to avoid unnecessary detours and directly access the treasure of enlightenment. With his wholehearted dedication and wisdom, he strives to carry on the lineage and bring salvation to all beings.
How It Begins

Gilbert’s meditative practice began more than 50 years ago. He studied various forms of meditation, martial arts and Chi Gong yet states that nothing that he has studied comes close to matching the simplicity and the beauty of the practice of Chan.

Lineage

Throughout his practice, Gilbert sought a master who was truly worthy of following. He found that in venerable Master Sheng-yen. He is deeply grateful for having had the opportunity to study under Master Sheng-yen, and hopes that one day he may be able to display even one percent (1%) of the wisdom and compassion that his master possessed.
In 2002, he received Dharma Transmission from Chan Master Sheng Yen, making him the only western lineage holder currently residing in the United States. He conducts retreats and lectures throughout North America. Gilbert teaches in a classical Chan style which inspires his students to investigate Chan through diligent practice.

2024 Gilbert's DDRC Retreat

  • May 3-11, 2024 / Pine Bush, NY
This retreat will cover all major Chan methods of meditation. It will apply classical Right View to these methods to make the methods more effective. The ancient Chan Masters have stated that for one to practice Chan they must have a “true and proper understanding.”
Right View is an exploration into how Mind works. Thus the participants will be instructed into how to “turn the Mind’s eye inward” to utilize Buddha Mind perception applied to their methods.
Gilbert presents this instruction in a manner that is beneficial to all levels of practitioners from novice to advanced practitioners. He has used this training in many venues worldwide to successfully advance the practice of practitioners. Many practitioners have shown great progress in not only their mediation but doctrinal understanding.
